Masturbation and eyesight
« on: September 06, 2014, 11:20:18 AM »
A very well known myth is that masturbation worsens vision or even makes on go blind. But is there possibly some truth to this myth?

Yes I know I know I know everyone will say, masturbation is completely healthy and has no negative side effects (which I personally don't completely believe) and that it will not worsen your eyesight. It's the standard response to this myth.

However, I am a stubborn man, So I keep pressing on.

Yesterday I have masturbated a few times for the first time in a long time. I am not dependent on/addicted to masturbation (as in I do it only whenever I feel like it, which is like maybe once every two or three weeks or so). A lot of people seem to do it at least a few times a week, many even up to three times a day! I'm a young guy but even I can't do that.
So yesterday I have masturbated and ejaculated two times. First time since I started doing Hocus Focus. Today when I got up, I noticed that my vision was way worse. This was very unusual because in the past week and a half of practice my vision has been steadily improving every single day and upon waking my vision would not have fallen back to where it was before - the improvements were permanent.
And today it just so happens that my vision has noticeably deteriorated (I tested this with my Snellen as I do every day and there was a massive difference) after two sessions of masturbation the previous day? Hmmm.
It has now gone back to the way it was before, clear and sharp as it used to be before my masturbation sessions yesterday.
So what's the deal here? Why did I never notice worse eyesight in the past after masturbating? Well, probably because my vision was already so bad that I wouldn't have noticed a deterioration anyways. But now of course that I'm obsessed with vision improvement at the moment and have been steadily improving my vision everyday, now I DID notice the worsened vision after masturbation.
So I went on Google to do a little research. Note that I really hesitate to post these quotes because first of all I do realize the sources aren't too reliable and also, further research on masturbation being linked to PDEx and cGMP hasn't gotten me any satisfactory results whatsoever but for those interested anyway, read on:

It is possible that masturbation and especially over-masturbation causes a decline in PDE-5 responsible for visual acuity both periferal and central. Individuals with retinal degenerations such as in Macular Degeneration or Retinitis Pigmentosa, are advised not to use Viagra, Cialis or Levitra which are PDE-5 inhibitors. PDE-5 is the enzyme which is needed to prevent an erection after intercourse during the detumscence period of refraction after intercourse (the penile recovery period). The problem is that PDE-5 is also responsible for visual health. Many individuals with retinal issues have noticed a decline in vision after using these erection enhancers. Some see blue haze, some actually experience retinal degeneration after using ED enhancers. After this was discovered, the companies included visual problems in their contraindications. Masturbation could be having a similar effect on those with undiscovered retinal issues and/or with healthy individuals. Thus, masturbation could seriously impair visual function either temporarily (until the PDE-5 levels return to normal), or could damage the enzymatic mechanism and cause increasing debilitating blindness. Thus, there could be some truth to the saying that masturbation will make you blind. A similar mechanism is involved in the maintenance of the hair follicles ... masturbation could increase the secretion and process of DHT (dyhydrotestosterone) which can cause baldness and even precipitate prostate cancer. The masturbatory process causes an increase of natural aromatase inhibitors which suppress testosterone, increase the production of DHT and thus cause baldness. There may be truth to the saying that masturbation causes ones vision to fade and hair to fall out.

Wow. That seems to explain a lot.  So I did some research on the PDE-5 enzyme and I found the following about PDE-5 inhibitors:

In response to a small number of postmarketing reports of vision loss in men taking type 5 phosphodiesterase (PDE-5) inhibitors, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a news release to advise healthcare providers of the potential risk. FDA has received 43 reports of varying degrees of vision loss, including blindness, among users of these drugs -- 38 cases in men using sildenafil, 4 in men using tadalafil, and 1 case in a man using vardenafil. Most of these cases of vision loss were due to nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). The loss of vision in some cases has been irreversible.

NAION is a vascular event that is presumed to occur due to a decrease in blood flow to the small arteries that supply the optic nerve. A disruption in the blood supply to the optic nerve causes damage to the nerve. Injury to the nerve may result in permanent visual loss in 1 or both eyes. There are 2 types: arteritic and nonarteritic. Arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AAION) is an inflammatory vasculitis, and nonarteritic (NAION) is a diagnosis of exclusion, which is made in the absence of provable arteritis. NAION is 6 times more common than AAION due to temporal arteritis. NAION is the most common acute optic neuropathy and one of the most common causes of sudden vision loss in the elderly. The annual incidence in white persons is 2.3 to 10.2 per 100,000 for persons over the age of 50. There are 1500 to 6000 new cases every year in the United States.[1,2]

Yes, I realize the following is from a site called "herballove.com" and is selling products, but let's post it anyways:

Excessive sexual activity or masturbation causes oxidative stress, damaging the inner layer of the eye where the rods and cones are located. Think of rods and cones as molecular strainers that catch light. When the strainer becomes damaged due to oxidative stress, or a deficiency in cGMP, nitric oxide or acetylcholine, the rod visual sensory nerves experience a depletion of C3G phyotochemicals, which stabilizes visual input. C3G phyotochemicals allow the eye to process images, similar to a graphics card in a computer. When C3G phyotochemicals see a reduction, the eye cannot process images fast enough. The blurry, squiggly lines known as eye floaters are the result of reduced C3G chemicals trying to process images.

Men who ejaculate multiple times a day experience deficiencies in these neurochemicals necessary for health eyes and sexual function. According to recent studies, a correlation of eye floaters and sexual dysfunctions, e.g., weak erections, premature ejaculations and impotence, was found.

Research has further shown that oxidative stress damages the sympathetic nerves and smooth muscles of the iris. Oxidative stress of ocular tissues is a major culprit behind vision problems, such as eye floaters, glaucoma and cataracts. In fact, Western Europe scientist found almost half of individuals with inflammation involving the posterior segment of the eye had visual impairment. The inflammatory response was often triggered by infection, systemic and metabolic disorders, such as sexual exhaustion.  [1] [3] [4] [5] [6]

During sexual stimulation, a substance called nitric oxide is released. The release of nitric oxide leads to an increase in another substance called cGMP. The role of cGMP is to effect an increase in the inflow of blood into the penis. An erection requires increase in the inflow of blood into the penis.

Unfortunately or fortunately (depending on your wishes,) cGMP does not last forever. It is degraded by an enzyme called PDE5. If there is too much PDE5, there will be marked degradation of cGMP, less inflow of blood, and loss of the erection. Alternatively, if there is less PDE5, there will be little degradation of cGMP, more inflow of blood, and maintenance of erection.

The drug Viagra helps to promote and maintain an erection by inhibiting PDE5. PDE5 belongs to a group of substances called PDEs, which include PDE3 and PDE6 among others. PDE5 is found in the penis. PDE3 is found in the heart. PDE6 is found guess where?) in the eyes.

In manufacturing Viagra, it was important to find a drug that was highly selective for PDE5 compared to other PDEs. This selectivity was achieved to a great extent but it was not absolute and complete. Viagra has approximately a 4,000-fold selectivity for PDE5 versus PDE3. This is important because PDE3 is involved in the control of contraction of the heart. Why gain an erection via less PDE5 and lose control of the contraction of your heart via less PDE3?

Viagra is only about 10-fold as potent for PDE5 compared to PDE6, which is found in the eyes. This lower selectivity of Viagra for PDE6 (eyes) compared to PDE5 (penis) is thought to be the basis for abnormalities related to colour vision observed with higher doses of Viagra. Indeed, there may be temporary difficulty discriminating blue and green colours at certain doses of Viagra. However, evaluation of visual function at doses up to twice the maximum recommended dose revealed no effects of Viagra on visual acuity, pressure in the eyes, or the reaction of the pupils of the eyes.

Nonetheless, there is a link between an erection and the eyes. Different members of the same family of substances, PDE5 and the PDCE6 are found in the penis and the eyes respectively. Masturbation may not cause blindness, but there is a biochemical connection between the penis and the eyes.

So, basically, the premise is that that masturbation/erection/ejaculation reduces PDE5 and causes oxidative stress, all of which worsens vision. And that my vision has gone back to normal because my PDE5 levels have returned to normal. I really don't know.

I obviously only have anecdotal evidence to support the statement that masturbation worsens eyesight. And even that was just yesterday but it is still quite a coincidence nonetheless. My vision has been improving everyday in the past week and a half, I test it everyday, vision is clear and sharp upon waking up, and then all of sudden after masturbation, I wake up with blurrier vision? I need to know from other people who practice vision improvement. Preferably from people who, like me, masturbate only once in a while. Do you notice any fluctuations in your visual acuity after masturbating?
